EnglishAlthough a majority in society is Catholic and despite the fact that the Catholic church maintains an important political role, Mexico has taken important steps in the liberation of the abortion laws. In April 2007, Mexico City approved depenalization and began to offer services in public hospitals and other health institutions. This article argues that this was possible thanks to the feminist groups, the electoral polarization and the triumph of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (Partido de la Revolucion Democratica) in the Federal District. This success is part of a long trajectory which places Mexico in the vanguard of Latin America in relation to the humanitarian treatment of abortion.
