Over the last 50 years, communication and media studies have been among the fastest growing fields in the world, establishing themselves well beyond their earliest homes in the United States and Germany. Intellectually, their global growth has been characterized by a mix of US hegemony and international pluralism and by continuing struggles to establish full academic legitimacy. Contestation among competing paradigms has been pronounced, existing alongside efforts to establish an integrated discipline of communication science. Institutionally, growth has been driven by increasing demand for undergraduate education along with the formation of scholarly and professional infrastructures. Societally, it is tied up with the global proliferation of media and the increasing recognition of the social and vocational relevance of communication (→ Communication as a Field and Discipline; Communication and Media Studies, History to 1968).
