Pakistan, which became a separate state after gaining independence from Britain in 1947, is located in a diverse multilingual and plurilingual region of South Asia. Its linguistic diversity on the Greenberg index is measured to be 0.762, which, were it 1, would imply no two people in the country have the same first or heritage language (Lewis, 2009). Studies suggest the local linguistic repertoire of Pakistan is inherently plurilingual (Canagarajah & Ashraf, 2013) and new forms of globalization have made English part of this plurilingual repertoire (Canagarajah, 2009; Canagarajah & Ashraf, 2013).
