This paper presents a theoretical framework from which to analyze marital adjustment in the post-retirement years. A lack of consistent usage, among professionals, regarding the concept marital adjustment is noted. Furthermore, attention is drawn to the duality nature of defining the concept. Four major dimensions of marital adjustment are discussed: (a) self-esteem, (b) interpersonal commitment, (c) availability of resources, and (d) goal consensus. An examination of marital dynamics in the post-retirement years includes a discussion of three ideal-typical conjugal relationships: (a) The Husband-Wife, (b) The Parent-Child, and (c) The Associates. The framework presented herein is thought to provide a foundation for developing suggestions that may subsequently enrich the marital lives of older persons.
