Canadian federal and provincial government organisations have long been engaged in building and maintaining extensive collections of digital topographic mapping datasets, road network files and property mapping databases in support of their own respective mandates and obligations. Beginning in the mid-1980s, cooperative spatial datasharing and cost-sharing arrangements at both the federal and federal-provincial levels were developed in support of accelerating several of these mapping programs.
