This paper proposes that knowledge about the properties and spatial relationships of real-world phenomena are dependent upon, and a consequence of, an intelligent agent’s sensory experience. The a priori existence of objects in nature is rejected. A theory of empirical spatial and property knowledge is developed, based on sensors, and sensor responses, mapping real-world structures and their properties. This theory is applied to the geographic knowledge represented by chloropleth maps and their digital database equivalents, leading to an understanding of geographic induction and deduction.
