Multilateral, bilateral and non-governmental organisations are the three key providers of international health aid, with private funding playing an increasing role. The preceding Topics on the Millennium Development Goals have covered the Goals specifically targeted to improving health:• Goal 4, reduction of child mortality;• Goal 5, improvement of maternal health; and• Goal 6, reduction of AIDS, malaria and other diseases. While all MDGs are linked to health, for example, through greater environmental sustainability and improved water supply, the three goals specifically aimed at health form the basis of the policies and projects of organisations discussed in this Topic.Consider the following two questions:• What is the extent of health-related needs in developing countries?• How are these needs addressed by international organisations? This resource starts by describing the health needs of developing countries followed by a discussion of the response offered by international organisations.Information on the structures, roles and type of aid provided by these organisations is then provided, with specific discussion of the place of bilateral and non-governmental organisations in delivering health aid to poorer countries.
