Nowadays, assessment of education students' potential effectiveness as teachers often includes a profile of desired personality characteristics. One assessment device constructed to measure such characteristics is the Missouri Pre-Professional Teacher Interview (MPTI), which consists of 54 interview questions grouped under nine themes: Achiever, Stimulator, Developer, Relator, Team, Responsibility, Command, Input Drive, and Self-Discipline. Investigators have demonstrated that outstanding preservice and recently graduated teachers representing a variety of elementary and secondary educational disciplines strongly manifested these themes. Using the MPTI, the author interviewed 55 undergraduate music education majors enrolled in two major universities and developed a personality profile based on the data. He then correlated subjects' MPTI scores with five conventional success indicators: high school class rank, overall grade point average, scores on the mathematics and English subtests of the ACT, and grades on applied performance juries. Results indicated that subjects scored relatively high on the Stimulator, Developer, and Command themes, and relatively low on the Input Drive theme. Overall grade point average emerged as a significant predictor of MPTI profiles.
