Introduction In recent years, much has been written and said about the graying of the library profession and the concern that there are not enough new information professionals to replace those who have already retired, as well as those who are set to retire within the next decade. At the same time, there have been plenty of discussions about the lack of diversity within our ranks and the need for our workforce to be more reflective of the public that we serve. We are, thus, faced with the imperative to attract and train new librarians, especially those from minority groups. The Chesapeake Information and Research Library Alliance (CIRLA) Fellows Program is an innovative way to address both these problems. It is a comprehensive training program designed to recruit diverse individuals into research library careers through a combination of practical experience, mentoring, and professional development.
