This chapter comments on the conceptualization of Dirk Van de Kaa whose essay appears in the same book on the term in the context of western industrialized countries. The author argues that Van de Kaas conceptualization has transformed the ideas of postmodernism into variables that would not be recognized or accepted by postmodernists. Also the conceptualization of postmodernity appears to be insignificant in understanding fertility preferences. In this respect the author explores the effects of postmodernism on the fertility preferences and fertility explanation on the persistence of fertility preferences at or above the replacement levels and forecasts on future demographic trends. Moreover arguments on the associations between values and fertility preferences at the individual and country level are advanced.
