In this reference for transport policymakers, planners and researchers, the author sheds new light on the controversial debate about the role of automobile and truck transport in Europe and shows that many commonly held assumptions are poorly founded. In examining all forms of land transport, including urban and nonurban roadways, railways, freight transport, maritime and air transportation, the author argues why transport policies worldwide are in need of considerable change. Some of the topics covered are: road accidents; competition between water, rail, air and highways; freight transport; road networks; metroroutes; railway networks; sea crossings; urban transportation centers; environmental issues and the car.
