Abstract

This chapter reports the findings of commissioned research into potential skill shortages and gaps that might present barriers to future tourism development in the Greater Manchester area, UK. It also identifies current tourism employment trends, including trends in labour turnover, staff retention and wages. It is concluded that latent and unreported skill deficiencies are related to poor management development and the narrow cost-driven business strategy being followed in some tourism firms.
