This chapter reviews the evidence from experiments evaluating the efficacy of treatments for offenders with ID. It presents experiments with individuals who had not been convicted of offences, but who were in forensic services because of illegal behavior similar to convicted offenders. Most offenders have borderline or mild ID. This is difficult to define because of numerous problems in the accurate diagnosis of borderline and mild IQ. Several studies have reported prevalences of individuals with ID in forensic setting and prisons. There is a growing consensus concerning dynamic risk factors in violent offenders and sex offenders without ID. Substance abuse and deviant sexual preferences are core dynamic risk factors for violent offenders and sex offenders, respectively. The chapter discusses three experiments evaluating treatment of convicted offenders and offending-like behavior in individuals with ID who had not been convicted. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), mindfulness and behavioral skills training are discussed.
