Traditional Forging of Swords and Knives with Legitimate Damascus Steel/ Traditionelles Schmieden von Schwertern und Messern aus echtem Damaszenerstahl

Abstract

It can be stated that Damascus Steel's main characteristic is the macroscopic visualisation of light-coloured fine bands winding over the steel's gray background. In the present research, a reproduction of pieces of these steels has been reached using a mixture of ancient and modern techniques. A metallographic research of archaeological pieces and those obtained by our blacksmiths has been carried out establishing accurately which thermomechanical treatments are more appropriate.
