Health behaviour theories (HBTs) focus on the triadic relationship between intra- and interpersonal factors and the behaviour of interest, with or without consideration of the context comprising concentric environmental levels of influence on the behaviour of interest. This chapter discusses four theories about individual behaviour. Examples of how the theory has been used in healthcare profession education (HPE) research are presented. The theory of reasoned action (TRA), theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and integrated behavioural model (IBM) represent progressively comprehensive variations on a similar theme. The health belief model (HBM) has been used to explore decisions about childbearing during residency. The trans-theoretical model (TTM) comprises four sets of constructs: stages of change, processes of change, self-efficacy and decisional balance. This chapter talks about the Predisposing, Reinforcing and Enabling Constructs in Educational/Environmental Diagnosis and Evaluation (PRECEDE) model and the Policy, Regulatory and Organisational Constructs in Educational and Environmental Development (PROCEED) model.
