Given the importance of new archaeological discoveries in China, it is essential to understand both the magnitude of the problem there and the significant efforts being undertaken in China as well as among the international community to curtail the losses in order to preserve and more fully understand China's past. The scale of archaeological looting in China has always been difficult to determine with any precision, given China' s vast size, the remoteness of most sites, and the secretiveness of the looting and smuggling process. Efforts to stem the destruction of China's cultural heritage have taken on new urgency over the past decade.
