Abstract

The area herein referred to as the Philadelphia district lies between 39° 45' and 40° 15' north latitude and 75° and 75° 30' west longitude.It covers one-quarter of a square degree, which is equivalent in this latitude to 915.25 square miles, or about 34.50 miles from north to south and 26.53 miles from east to west.The district consists of four quadrangles the Germantown, Norristown, Philadelphia, and Chester each of which measures fifteen minutes of latitude and fifteen minutes of longitude.It lies in three States Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware and embraces in whole or in part ten counties, namely: Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Delaware, and Chester counties in Pennsylvania ; Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties in New Jersey; and Newcastle County in Delaware.Within these limits there is a population of more than a million and a half.
