Practical Theology often engages with other disciplines. In a world where a discernable youth culture is evident it is no wonder that we, in youth ministry, often struggle to be both theologically informed and culturally relevant. This article tries to discuss the possibilities of doing just that. The challenging empirical reality of the South African society is our sociological and cultural departure point. The inclusive congregational nature of youth ministry, differentiated in focus, is our basic theological departure point. The case for this departure point is not argued but rather complemented by other research such as done by K C Dean (2004). Several specific cultural issues in the South African society are also discussed and related to the theological departure point. Being researchers within this subject field both authors acknowledge and accept the dynamic and contextual nature of relating theologically informed youth ministry to cultural issues.
