Self-identity is a major milestone in the young child's life. Identity refers to the development of a self-system, the last phase of which is consciousness. The emergence of consciousness bears upon three issues related to social life: Who am I?, What is my relationship to others?, and How do I feel? An analysis of levels of skill is used to show that aspects of the self-system emerge over the first year and a half of life. The last phase, which completes but does not end the devel opmental structure of the self-system, is the emergence of consciousness at around 18 months. Until this milestone, children exhibit behaviors which appear similar to adult-like skills, however these behaviors reflect lower level abilities. It is not until consciousness emerges that adult abilities such as social relationships, imitation, and the experiencing of emotions can be said to occur.
