This book provides information on how street design can make or break a community. In a detailed study of the changing nature of suburban street design over the past two centuries, the authors show how the design and layout of residential streets help to determine the character and quality of communities. They describe how street design standards have changed and outline different design approaches, such as picturesque suburbs, checkerboard grids, branching culs-de-sac and shared streets. In addition, they provide strategies for reducing urban sprawl and re-establishing a community space.
