Throughout history, the written word and literature have had a lasting influence on our perception of distant places and the development of travelling. This chapter examines the contributions of writing from ancient civilizations to the present day and explores how literary figures not only described distant lands and exotic cultures, but also ignited readers’ innate desire to travel. At the same time, advances in printing technology increased the reach and influence of written works. This change, combined with advances in transport and communication technology and social changes brought about by industrialization and capitalism, accelerated the historical development of modern tourism.
