The following paper summarizes the analysis of Southwestern-style culinary ceramics from protohistoric sites on the Southern Plains. These ceramics, referred to by the type name Tierra Blanca Plain, closely resemble “striated utility wares” from the northern Rio Grande region of New Mexico. Sherds of Tierra Blanca Plain are often associated with other evidence of Southwestern contact, including obsidian, turquoise, and Rio Grande glaze-paint ceramics. The primary objectives of this research are to describe the geographical distribution of Tierra Blanca Plain ceramics, and to place them in their proper archaeological context; to develop a standard description for the type, while recording the range of variability present in production over a large geographical area; to analyze the stylistic, technical and compositional relationship between Tierra Blanca Plain ceramics and the culinary ware tradition of the Rio Grande; and to interpret the production, distribution and function of these ceramics within the larger economic context of protohistoric Plains-Pueblo interaction.
