In this entry, we place the study of household money management into a larger institutional-level analysis. Complementing analyses of money management at the couple level, institutional approaches consider how the larger context within which the couple is embedded matters for how money is managed. We focus on the two themes that are prominent in the social science research on money management among married couples: (i) the choice of integrating resources over keeping money separate, and (ii) the gender equality of relationships associated with different money management strategies. Through these analyses, the study of money management helps us understand how the institution of marriage and gender dynamics have changed (or how much they have not changed). In other words, as sociologists have noted, money is more than its use in financial exchanges. It is a window into complex social dynamics and institutions.
