This article deals with ‘Reasons for the lack of an informed, vigorous debate on media ethics’. This lack can be attributed to a number of reasons. These include: an uninformed and sometimes immature public; the repressive government policies of the past; the seeming lack of enthusiasm by the media for such a debate; the low profile of the old Media Council and the expected even lower profile of the new Press Council; and academics' reticence to take a strong stand. It is argued that the public should be helped to become informed and balanced media critics. If all parties are constructively critical of the media, the media can play its own critical-constructive role in a democratic South Africa.
