This chapter examines issues of orality and the relationship of orality and literacy in Old and Middle English literature. It focuses on questions of oral composition, performance, transmission, and reception. The problems of identifying an oral milieu for oral-derived texts and the various approaches to understanding oral tradition, in particular the oral-formulaic theory, are discussed. Further topics are the function of memory and memorization in the production and transmission of texts and the role of public readers and entertainers (scop and minstrel) in the performance of epic and romance.
