Taking as a reference the thought of Hannah Arendt, this paper analyses the public/private opposition focusing on the historical changes in the two concepts and on their consequences, since 19th century, for the archival practice both in terms of conservation and publication of documents. The author also examines the problem of human rights as related to archives (the right to information and the right to privacy) pointing out that it reflects the confrontation between public and private during the last three centuries. Finally, there is a discussion of the problem of accessing documents, particularly in the case of private archives.
