With the advent of licensing and avenues for career private practice as social work clinician, attitudes and values of practitioners may be shifting and running counter to our code of ethics. Such a shift may result in increasing inattention to the needs of the most vulnerable in our society. A number of factors may be responsible for the dilemma which this shift poses. This paper addresses our evolving profession and the multiple sociopsychological and political stressors which influence it. Possible solutions to limit negative outcomes of licensing and to maintain standards of competence are discussed.
