This book outlines the strategic planning process for local government officials and those who work with them to anticipate and shape the future of their communities. The initial chapters of this book define the terms and describe the process. Subsequent chapters cite examples, real and fictitious, to demonstrate the principles involved. The final chapter provides a step-by-step strategic planning guide for local governments, and extensive appendices provide examples of written plans from a number of communities. Excerpts from the strategic plans of the following ten communities are used throughout this book to provide examples of alternative approaches and presentations: Arlington, Texas; Berkley, Michigan; Catawba County, North Carolina; Clifton, New Jersey; Cocoa, Florida; Outagamie County, Wisconsin; Placentia, California; Santa Clarita, California; Whitley County, Indiana; and Wichita, Kansas.
