Canon formation is necessary and inevitable. In 1985 Janet Staiger suggested two guiding principles to revise the process of canon formation: (1) include works that were previously marginalized and (2) eliminate or mitigate the role of evaluative criteria in canon formation to avoid repeating a system of exclusion and inclusion. In this paper I review Jonathan Rosenbaum's two most recent books, Movie Mutations (Citation2003) and Essential Cinema (Citation2004), in the context of Staiger's two recommendations and argue that the books embrace the first guideline while rejecting the second. I also conduct a statistical analysis of Rosenbaum's 1,000‐film canon in order to understand more clearly its implications.
