The aim of this article is to reflect the politics of method of participatory ELSA-research. Building on three research projects we analyse how different methodical settings allow for different representations of science and society. We first discuss how the three settings open up different possibilities to think and talk about a given topic. Second, we turn to the citizens and scientists “inhabiting” the settings: Do they accept the given structures or do they attempt to rearrange them according to their visions? Third, we ask how the participants relate the discussed experiments to broader dynamics of the governance of techno-scientific developments in the framework of a given techno-political culture. We conclude by discussing the politics of method of participatory ELSA- research, as well as the responsibility of those designing participatory research settings.
