The purpose of the manual is to provide the basic, practical information needed to enable nonconservator staff of libraries and archives to plan and implement sound collections care programs. It is intended for those who must make decisions that affect preservation of collections or who want to upgrade standards of care to preserve materials better. The emphasis is on collections care and prevention of deterioration of whole collections. Topics covered include planning and prioritizing, the environment, emergency management, storage and handling, reformatting, and conservation procedures. Revised and expanded, this second edition of the manual now includes discussion of the importance of collections policies, light protection for library and archive materials, storage solutions for oversize paper artifacts, and the implications of digital imaging for preservation.
