Abstract David Hume was an eighteenth‐century philosopher and the leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, that remarkable efflorescence of genius in a backward corner of Europe which had a profound influence on all European thought. Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, including Hume, Adam Smith, Adam Ferguson, Francis Hutcheson, and others, made important contributions to the disciplines of philosophy and history. They virtually invented political economy, ancestor of the modern discipline called economics. Although Hume is today studied mostly in philosophy departments, he was known to his contemporaries primarily as a historian and essayist, author of the six‐volumeHistory of England. Hume's writings were influential on the American founders, although Thomas Jefferson found what he called Hume's “toryism” so offensive that he sought to have Hume'sHistorybanned from the library at his University of Virginia.
