The chapter first explains the difference between testing and assessment; assessment is an integration of several tests and other available data whereas testing refers to the process of administering, scoring, and perhaps interpreting individual test scores based on normative data. Then the chapter discusses the many advantages offered by learning personality assessment skills. Assessment teaches critical thinking, facilitates treatment planning, and facilitates the therapeutic process, among other reasons. This section is followed by a discussion of students' problems in conducting an assessment, followed by a discussion of the instructor's problems in teaching assessment. Teaching both introductory and advanced courses raises issues for both teacher and student, small issues of assessment with patients who are culturally diverse. In addition, ethical issues in assessment are discussed. Other segments of the chapter concern learning through doing assessment batteries and assessment during internship compared with assessment in graduate classes. Emphasis is placed upon a new paradigm in assessment, Therapeutic Assessment, in which the process of assessment itself is therapeutic. Finally, assessment in medical settings is briefly discussed, as is the role of assessment in the future.
