A clinical psychotherapy needs to turn its gaze to the\ncurrent demands, and update its practice in empirical\nstudies. The objective of this research is to ascertain\nthe sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of\nchildren treated in psychotherapy by learning problems.\nWe conducted a retrospective documentary study with\nrecords of 2106 children treated between 1979 and 2007\nin two outpatient psychological care of the city of Porto\nAlegre, southern Brazil. The results showed that demand\nfor Learning Problems is the fourth largest cause of psychotherapeutic\ncare. There was no statistically significant\ndifference regarding gender. Children with learning\nproblems come to psychotherapy more frequently in\nthe early stages of elementary school, around 7 years\nold. Increased demand for psychotherapy of children\nwith learning problems takes place in May. Perhaps,\nlearning difficulties can be understood simultaneously\nas a symptom global, in which other aspects, besides the\nuniqueness of the subject are involved. We conclude that\nindividual and social aspects involved in Learning Problems\nmay be useful in the clinical management of these\nchildren by professionals who are dedicated to meeting\nthis particular clientele. One must be aware of ongoing\npartnership which should be placed between psychologist\nand pedagogue. Both professionals, education and\nhealth, account for components of the child to know.
