The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the changes that have affected a key institution in people’s lives -family-and to set those changes in a wider context. It aims to describe processes of modernization and modernity and their effects on families, by providing a diagnostic study highlighting the diversity of families in Latin America and changes that have affected them in different socio-economic strata. While drawing attention to heterogeneous structures and increasing economic inequality among families, this study also highlights various types of a cultural change family has been confronted with, including demographic shifts, growing number of households headed by women, and women’s increasing participation both in labour market as well as in social and political domains.$$Inequality, Changes, Family in Latin America.
