This chapter explores the theoretical underpinnings of appreciative inquiry (AI) and positive psychology (PP), looks at how they currently contribute to the understanding of positive organizational change, and considers how they can contribute to the future of “innovation-inspired positive organizational development (OD).” First, it considers the various definitions of AI and looks at its philosophical and theoretical bases, before concluding with some reflections on the relationship between AI, psychology, and PP. The chapter then considers some definitions of PP, reflects on its underpinning theories, and locates it in relation to mainstream psychology. It aims to engage both AI and PI in conversation, with the hope that the strengths of each will complement the other and deepen the understanding of positive change. Finally, it describes describing how AI operates as a change process in an organizational context.
