This chapter addresses the narrow perspectivism of traditional approaches and highlights some of the current problems in Pure Land studies. It suggests new areas of research, and challenges the historiographical description of Pure Land Buddhism as a coherent and integrated system of practices, doctrines, and other related phenomena. The chapter stresses on the not necessarily representative aspects of Pure Land phenomena, presented from a single point of view. The representative patterns of Chinese and Japanese Pure Land traditions are discussed. The chapter focuses on some of the central foci in received Pure Land studies. These foci demonstrate how historical interpretations have served the claims of Japanese sectarian ideology. The chapter concludes with a discussion on ritualizations and deathbed rituals.
