"The details of the reception and persecution of Christians in Japan are relativelywell known and are not repeated here. This article instead tries to place these matters into the broader context of Japanese state policy toward religions in Japan. Obviously, because of the foreignness of Christianity and the political/economic factors that attended its introduction, Christianitys reception in Japan was meaning-fully different from that of other religions. But, in some ways our understanding of Christianitys fate in Japan can be enhanced by examining the nascent states policies toward other religious movements and practitioners, such as the Nichiren-shu and Jodo Shin Buddhists, divination specialists, and so on. This article makes a preliminaryattempt at such analysis."
