TDUSINESS Ethics is a relatively new field, *-* and not surprisingly. Until recently sub? stantive moral philosophy had been struggling to survive the assault from positivism and emotivism. During the last few years, however, there has been a recovery, and ethics is making a comeback in academic philosophy. In addition, the profession of academic philos? ophy has itself not been booming. This has added to the impetus of philosophers to explore new avenues for doing their work. Had they continued to work only in metaphysics, epistemology, meta-ethics, and the like, their students would have evaporated. But with expansion of the scope of their field, philosophers can hope to gain new customers. Nevertheless, embarking on work in business ethics means descending from the Ivory Tower. This descent can involve dangers, such as indulging in one's biases and neglecting the meticulous work of moral analysis and justifica? tion on which ethical judgment may well ulti? mately have to rest.
