In 1559-1561 Tristan de Luna y Arellano led an expedition which attempted to establish a Spanish colonial presence on the Gulf Coast, the lower Atlantic Coast, and the interior of the Southeast. The colony failed, but the documentary record of this expedition contains information which sheds light on the late prehistoric occupation of the region. This paper locates, with varying degrees of precision, the towns and localities visited by Luna and his men, as well as setting forth a hypothesis about larger geopolitical relationships among several paramount chiefdoms in the sixteenth-century Southeast.
