Recent syntheses of Australian prehistory have emphasised the antiquity of colonisation of the continent and the changes associated with the Pleistocene/Holocene transition (Jones 1968, 1977, 1979; Bowdler 1977; Urry 1978; White and O'Connell 1979; Horton 1981), whereas the last 5000 years have received far less attention (but see Mulvaney 1975, Flood 1983 and Lourandos 1983a). This is perhaps understandable given the considerable antiquity of occupation and the scale of Pleistocene environmental changes. However, these more dramatic episodes have tended to divert attention from less marked but perhaps equally important Holocene environmental changes and subsequent human adaptations.
