The evolution of the discipline of International Relations has been conditioned by a number of factors, principal among them are debates which are internal to the academic community, ignited by the publication of a key book or article which sets the agenda for the next stage in the discipline’s history. Another source of influence on the internal development of a discipline is derived from encounters with other academic communities such as political theory, sociology, law and history. At a deeper structural level, the ideas which dominate a particular field of enquiry are shaped by wider social forces embodied in, for example, scientific or ideological revolutions. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
