This case study deals with the reliability improvement of a transaxle unit of an automobile. This is important as the cost to rectify failures of such units is high and has an impact on customer satisfaction. We outline the approach taken by Toyota and the component manufacturer to achieve this. This involved a scientific approach to the analysis of the oil leakage mechanism through a “Dual Total Task Management Team” involving Toyota and the component manufacturer. The visualization of the oil seal leakage dynamics and the use of factor analysis based on “Science SQC” were two critical elements of this approach. This led to a better understanding of the oil leakage mechanism and changes in design to achieve higher reliability.
