Recently, aqueous electrolytes have been suggested as a way to develop fingermarks on porous and non-porous surfaces. Although latent fingermarks were developed successfully, the processing time and the change in the surface texture (damage) were limiting factors. The current study attempts to overcome these limitations by decreasing the development time for latent fingermarks on non-porous surfaces such as metals. Inorganic salts were selected based on the activity series of the elements with specific salts being used for each of the different metals used in the study. The fingermarks were successfully visualized with a reduced processing time. The visualization effect is likely due to a series of replacement reactions, the corrosive effects of chlorides on metals and the formation of film that inhibits the corrosion, with the exact mechanism specific to a metal/salt pair.
