This paper examines the factors that influence how the social entrepreneur operates in a rural context and the difficulties faced by the rural social entrepreneur. A survey was conducted on thirty stakeholders in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Data analysis identified a number of interesting points, for instance major constraints for the development of social entrepreneurship; issues which might support social entrepreneurs and their activities; and that there exists a group of factors, which in one way are considered as barriers and in another as promoters. Most of the findings relate to the remote areas and have a particular rural resonance. Interestingly, there are also some of the issues which are likely to be experienced across the whole of the Scottish social economy including urban areas.
