This paper reports interdisciplinary\nresearch between conservators and\nengineers designed to enhance the\nlong-term conservation of tapestries\n(tapestry-weave hangings) on longterm\ndisplay. The aim is to monitor,\nmeasure and document the strain\nexperienced by different areas of a\ntapestry while it is hanging on display.\nInitial research has established that\ndamage can be identified in the early\nstages of its inception, i.e., before it is\nvisible to the naked eye. The paper also\nreports initial results of strain data\nvisualisation that allows curators and\nconservators to examine how strain\ndevelops, thereby facilitating\npredictions about the changes in the\nform or condition of the tapestry.\nStrain data visualisation also allows the\nstrain process to be recorded, thereby\nfacilitating the effective documentation\nof display methods and conservation\ninterventions. The paper reports the\nuse of point measurements (using\nsilica optical fibre sensors) and full-field\nmonitoring (using 3-D\nphotogrammetry with digital image\ncorrelation (DIC)).
