Ellipsis is the phenomenon whereby speakers omit from an utterance normally obligatory elements of syntactic structure. CPE has been shown to interact with syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors. It has provided a testing ground for competing hypotheses concerning the relationship between syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. This chapter presents a summary of generalizations made about the properties of CPE that have emerged from previous studies. It examines previous accounts of those properties; and groups these accounts under two headings: the markedness-based account and the information structural account. The chapter then presents an alternative probability-based account of CPE as developed in H. Lee (2006b, 2010, 2011a, 2011b). Previous research on CPE in Japanese and Korean has identified a number of linguistic and non-linguistic factors that favor CPE. An intuition which recurs in the functional-typological literature on DCM is that they arise from the need to maximally differentiate subject and object.
