ABSTRACT The essay analyses two works by the politician and intelectual Juan José Nieto: La Geografía de la Provincia de Cartagena (Geography of the Cartagena Province) and the novel Ingermina o la hija de Calamar (Ingermina or Squid’s Daughter). Through these works he outstands the way in which the author in his process of building up the memory of the city and of the province of Cartagena, denies or satanizes the presence of black or mulatto people, fact that outstands, on one side, the political relevance and the interest on mobilization that these groups had during the time when the works are written, importance that ended up being uncomfortable in those attempts of organization and control; and on the other side, Nieto’s hurry for enrolling in the intellectual trend that was in fashion and to gain recognition despite of his humble origin.
