The focus of this conceptual article is to characterise and qualitatively evaluate measures for increas-ing the utilisation of loading space in intermodal road-rail freight line trains. These trains operate like intercity passenger trains with short transhipment stops along rail corridors aiming at comparatively small and short flows. The measures include adapting the train capacity, the departure timing, the train route and to which terminals the trucks are send as well as using trucks for replacing rail transport along the railway lines. Some of the measures require improved information sharing and their effect is strengthened with accompanying price incentives to transport buyers and decision support systems.
