The study of human performance technology (HPT) is an applied science. Its goal is to improve human performance in organizations, using systemic and systematic problem solving approaches. The goal of this chapter is connecting HPT practices to their theoretical foundations. To help practitioners learn and apply appropriate theory to their practice, it introduces a hypothetical scenario about an HPT practitioner. The use of system-related theories and models during the performance analysis phase helps to establish alignment among various intertwined factors involved in performance improvement practice. An important aspect of performance analysis is identifying the performance gap that needs to be addressed. Systemic thinking should be applied throughout the process of an HPT project. In selecting an intervention, it is important to assess the potential impact that decision may have on other aspects of the affected job and organization. Controlled Vocabulary Terms Human performance technology; Performance appraisal; Problem solving approach; Systems thinking
